Digital Skills Everyone Needs in Today’s World

Digital skills help people use computers, smartphones, the internet, online tools and AI effectively and safely. They are essential for communication, learning, work, business and accessing opportunities in today’s digital world.

Digital technology has become part of everyday life. We use smartphones to communicate, mobile money to make payments, websites to access government services, and computers to study or work. Because of this, having basic digital skills is increasingly important.

What Are Digital Skills?

Digital skills are the abilities needed to use computers, smartphones, the internet and other digital technologies effectively and safely.

They include simple activities such as typing a document as well as more advanced tasks such as analysing information, collaborating online or using artificial intelligence tools.

1. Using Digital Devices

A digitally skilled person should understand the basic operation of devices such as smartphones, tablets and computers.

This includes knowing how to:

  • Install and remove applications

  • Create and organise files and folders

  • Connect to Wi-Fi and mobile networks

  • Adjust basic device settings

  • Download and upload files

  • Keep devices updated

Understanding these basics makes it easier to learn other digital skills.

2. Finding Information Online

The internet contains enormous amounts of useful information, but finding reliable information requires skill.

For example, imagine you want to know the requirements for replacing a lost Kenyan identity document. Searching simply for “lost ID” may produce thousands of unrelated results.

A more focused search could be:

After finding information, you should also check who published it, when it was published and whether it agrees with information from an official or trusted source.

3. Creating Digital Content

Digital users should be able to create and work with common types of content.

A small business owner, for example, might use:

  • A spreadsheet to calculate monthly sales

  • A document to prepare a business report

  • A presentation to explain results during a meeting

  • A design application to create promotional materials

The important skill is not simply knowing that these tools exist, but understanding which tool is appropriate for a particular task.

4. Communicating Online

Email, messaging applications, video calls and social media have made communication faster and easier.

Good digital communication involves more than knowing how to send a message. It also means communicating professionally, protecting confidential information and understanding that messages shared online can easily be forwarded or copied.

5. Staying Safe Online

Digital technology also introduces risks such as scams, malware, identity theft and account hacking.

Some important habits include using strong passwords, enabling two-factor authentication where available, avoiding suspicious links and keeping important information backed up.

When using a shared or public computer, always sign out of your accounts and remove any personal files you downloaded before leaving.

6. Using Artificial Intelligence Responsibly

Artificial intelligence is becoming another important digital skill.

AI tools can help people generate ideas, explain difficult concepts, summarise information, analyse data and improve productivity.

However, AI can also produce incorrect information. Users should therefore review important answers, verify facts and avoid sharing confidential information unnecessarily.

The valuable skill is not simply knowing how to use AI, but knowing when to trust, question or verify its output.

Digital Skills Create Opportunities

Digital skills can help a student conduct research, an entrepreneur manage a business, an employee work more efficiently and a community organisation reach more people.

You do not need to become a computer programmer to become digitally capable. Start with the skills you need today and continue learning as technology changes.

The goal of digital literacy is not simply to know how technology works. It is to use technology confidently, safely and productively.
